Training managers and workers in ergonomics helps them understand and prevent work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), such as back pain and muscle injuries. It is the second step of a workplace ergonomics programme, as NIOSH sets it out.
Why train
Training helps every manager and worker exposed to conditions that contribute to WMSDs. Workers know the problems of their own jobs better than anyone, so give them the chance to describe those problems as they see them. Managers need to understand ergonomics to find and fix WMSDs correctly. Training lets managers, supervisors and workers:
- identify the risk factors for WMSDs;
- recognise their signs and symptoms;
- develop ways to reduce and prevent them.
Fit it to the audience
Tailor the training to the people taking it: their education, literacy, language and job interests. Brief any outside instructors on the company's operations, policies and practices before they start, so the training fits the work actually done there.
Three kinds of training (choose at least one)
