The BioSense Platform is a cloud-based early detection and monitoring system run by CDC's National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP). It helps public health agencies spot and respond to injuries, emerging diseases and environmental disasters — an investment in syndromic surveillance that improves readiness for health threats.
How it works
- It is a secure, integrated electronic health information system with standardized analytic tools that let the public health community detect, characterize, monitor and respond to events of concern.
- Data arrive in near real time — available as soon as 24 hours after a patient visits a participating facility.
A shared resource
BioSense is a CDC product but a shared one:
- facilities and vendors that submit data;
- users who analyze it;
- site administrators — public health liaisons who grant access, set data-sharing rules, onboard new facilities, run surveillance and pass on new guidance and tools.
Access comes through site administrators, state or local health departments, or NSSP directly.

Data interoperability
NSSP aims to share information between health care and public health partners in the right format, through the right channel, at the right time. Participants help keep data feeds high-quality by following syndromic surveillance messaging specifications that meet Public Health Information Network standards, and most follow the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services rules that encourage use of electronic health records.
Background
BioSense grew out of congressional mandates in the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002.
