When Samuel Colt started his Hartford factory on the banks of the
Connecticut River in 1847, it followed years of mismanagement and failure.
The early Colt story is not a success story; it is the second attempt. Demand
for his revolver changed his fortunes, and the Colt empire was born.
Colt died in 1862, fifteen years after founding the factory.
What happened next is the part usually left out. His wife, Elizabeth Colt,
led the company to its legendary status and **influenced Hartford for over 40
years**. She ran the firm for more than twice as long as her husband did, and
the city's shape owes at least as much to her.
Where it is
Coltsville National Historical Park is in Hartford, Connecticut, in the
heart of the Sheldon/Charter Oak neighbourhood — an industrial site inside
a living neighbourhood rather than a preserved campus. Directions are on the

The weather
Hartford has all four seasons: typically **hot in summer and cold in
winter**, with a pleasant spring and autumn.
