Three people bought botulinum toxin online and injected themselves

**Injection of botulinum neurotoxin approved by the FDA, for therapeutic or
cosmetic purposes, is considered safe when administered by a licensed and
trained medical professional.**

Every word in that sentence is doing work, and this report is what happens
when several of them are removed.

What happened

**During May–June 2025, three people experienced severe illness requiring
hospitalisation after self-injecting botulinum neurotoxin purchased online.**

After their clinical teams consulted with the CDC, all three received
botulinum antitoxin and **recovered with varying residual signs and
symptoms**.

Recovered, but not entirely. Botulinum toxin blocks nerve signals to muscle,
and a dose large enough to cause systemic illness does not necessarily leave
no trace.

The three things that went wrong

Set against the safety statement above:

1. Not administered by a licensed, trained professional — self-injected
2. Not an FDA-approved product, or not verifiably one
3. Not purchased from the manufacturer or an authorised distributor —
   bought online

A product sold online outside the authorised chain has no guaranteed
concentration. Botulinum toxin is dosed in units of a substance that is
lethal in microgram quantities; a preparation of unknown strength, injected by
someone without training, is the whole of the hazard here.

What the CDC asks

**BoNT should only be administered by licensed and trained medical
professionals, using recommended doses of FDA-approved products purchased
directly from the manufacturer or through authorized distributors.**

**Self-injection of BoNT purchased online from unauthorized sources can
result in serious adverse health effects.**

Worth noting also that the treatment existed and worked: **botulinum
antitoxin**, reached through a clinical consultation with the CDC. A clinician
faced with an unexplained severe weakness after a cosmetic injection has
somewhere to call.
