When you are hurt, your body stops the bleeding by forming a blood clot. That takes two things: blood cells called platelets, and proteins called clotting factors. A bleeding disorder means one of them is missing or failing — there are not enough platelets or clotting factors, or they don't work the way they should.

A diagnosis combines several blood tests that check for a bleeding disorder with a physical exam and your medical history.
