Constipation means having fewer than three bowel movements a week. The stool can be hard and dry, and sometimes painful to pass.
Almost everyone is constipated now and then. Usually it is brief and not serious.
Preventing constipation
- Eat more fruits, vegetables and grains, which are high in fiber.
- Drink plenty of water and other liquids.
- Get enough exercise.
- Take time to have a bowel movement when you need to.
- Use laxatives only if your health care provider says so.
- Ask your provider whether any of your medicines can cause constipation.
When to check in
You don't need a bowel movement every day. But if your bowel habits change, check with your provider.
