Americans are living longer, and older adults make up a growing share of the population. Our minds and bodies change as we age. A healthy lifestyle can help with those changes — and it may also prevent some health problems and help you make the most of your life.

Nine habits

1. Eat well

Your nutritional needs may change: you may need fewer calories but still need enough nutrients. A healthy eating plan means:

  • foods rich in nutrients without many extra calories — fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, low-fat dairy, nuts and seeds;
  • avoiding empty calories — chips, candy, baked goods, soda and alcohol;
  • foods low in cholesterol and fat;
  • enough to drink, so you don't get dehydrated.

2. Stay active

Physical activity may help you keep a healthy weight and avoid chronic health problems. If you haven't been active, start slowly and build up. How much you need depends on your age and health — ask your health care provider what is right for you.

3. Keep a healthy weight

Being overweight or underweight can both lead to health problems. Ask a health professional what a healthy weight is for you; eating well and exercise can help you reach it.

4. Keep your mind active

Learning new skills, reading and playing games can keep your mind active and improve your memory.

5. Put your mental health first

Try meditation, relaxation techniques or gratitude. Know the warning signs of a problem, and ask for help if you are struggling.

6. Do things you enjoy

People involved in hobbies and social and leisure activities may be at lower risk of some health problems. Doing what you enjoy may make you happier and improve your thinking.

7. Take an active part in your health care

Get regular checkups and the screenings you need. Know which medicines you take, why, and how to take them properly.

8. Don't smoke

Quitting is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It can lower your risk of several cancers, certain lung diseases and heart disease.

9. Prevent falls

Older adults are more likely to fall, and more likely to break a bone when they do. Regular eye checkups, regular physical activity and a safer home can lower the risk.

It's never too late

Even if you have never done any of these before, you can start now. If you have questions about any of these changes, or need help making them, ask your health care provider.
