In the first year, babies begin building skills they'll use for the rest of their lives. When will your baby take a first step or say a first word? It varies.
Areas of development

| Gross motor | controlling the head, sitting, crawling, perhaps starting to walk |
| Fine motor | holding a spoon, picking up a piece of cereal between thumb and finger |
| Sensory | seeing, hearing, tasting, touching and smelling |
| Language | making sounds, learning some words, understanding what people say |
| Social | playing with family members and other children |
Every baby is different
Babies don't develop at the same rate, and "normal" covers a wide range. Your baby may be ahead in some areas and a little behind in others. If you're worried about a possible delay, talk to your baby's health care provider.
