Key accomplishments
- Helped twelve clinical laboratories in the Caribbean, two of them in Jamaica, earn international accreditation.
- Built a regional cruise ship surveillance system that tracks outbreaks and alerts countries.
- Supported training for more than 380 public health professionals from 17 countries who graduated from the Caribbean Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP).
- Supported FETP-trained epidemiologists in outbreak responses to pertussis, Zika, chikungunya, dengue, rotavirus, sapovirus, norovirus, COVID-19 and natural disasters.
- Carried out Jamaica's first national household survey on violence against children in 2022.
- Strengthened national, regional and site staff's ability to monitor and evaluate HIV programs in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
HIV and tuberculosis
As a key implementer of the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), CDC works against HIV and TB in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, drawing on its scientific expertise and long relationships with ministries of health. Through PEPFAR it supports the region's public health infrastructure, improving the ability to prevent, detect and respond to HIV, TB and other infectious diseases and reducing the risk they reach the United States. Global health security

| Area | What CDC does |
|---|---|
| Health information systems | links separate systems and builds data repositories so data sit in one place; standardizes data collection through digitization, visualization and job aids |
| Laboratory systems | continuous quality improvement toward international accreditation: training and mentoring lab managers, better sample collection, testing and transport, and fast results and timely reporting |
| Workforce development | helped establish the Caribbean FETP in 2014, building the workforce's ability to prevent, detect and respond to health threats |
| Emergency management | experts and resources for fast outbreak response; during COVID-19, stronger diagnostic capacity, surveillance, emergency response skills, clinical management and border health |
Immunization
CDC's immunization work in the region has focused mainly on COVID-19 vaccination, including a mobile rapid response team that widened access to vaccines. It also supports broader immunization by improving vaccine access at rural health centers.
