Radiation is a form of energy, and everyone is exposed to small amounts every day, from sources such as sunlight. A radiation emergency would involve much larger amounts.
What could cause one
- a dirty bomb — explosives mixed with radioactive powder;
- fallout from a nuclear bomb;
- an accidental release from a nuclear reactor or a nuclear weapons plant.
What radiation does
A lot of radiation in a short time can cause burns or radiation sickness. A large enough exposure can cause premature aging or even death.
Protecting yourself
Nothing guarantees safety in a radiation emergency, but there are things you can do. Have a disaster plan: being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and losses.
If you do go through a disaster, it is normal to feel stressed, and you may need help finding ways to cope.
