On the afternoon of Monday, April 8, 2024, the Moon covered 99.96 percent of the Sun over Fort Stanwix National Monument in Rome, New York. About 1,550 people and some three dozen park staff and volunteers watched from the lawn. The park's volunteers turned the afternoon into a record: temperatures, times and what people saw, minute by minute. Nobody standing there will see anything close to it again from that spot until 2079, and a total eclipse will not cross it for more than two hundred years.
Total, partial, and "deep partial"
- Total: the Moon covers the whole Sun. Any one place sees one only every few hundred years.
- Partial: the Moon crosses the Sun off-centre, and takes what looks like a bite out of it.
- Deep partial: the bite is so large that the Sun shrinks to a dazzling sliver. The sky darkens, the air cools, and the horizon on the side of totality goes as dark as night while the rest glows like sunset.
At 99.96 percent, Fort Stanwix was about as deep as a partial eclipse gets.
The afternoon, minute by minute
Times are Eastern Daylight Time. Temperatures were taken on a tabletop in the shade beneath a telescope (the first, in sunlight), within 50 metres of 43.2102° N, 75.4571° W.

The temperature fell 22 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade between the start of the eclipse and its coldest moment, less than twenty minutes after the peak.

Who made it happen
The viewing party on the park's west lawn was hosted with the City of Rome, the Jervis Public Library, Rome Connected Community Schools and the New York Power Authority's Energy Zone. A geologist volunteering at the park collected the measurements; staff, volunteers and visitors made the observations.
