Some CDC sites, social media profiles, blogs and applications allow public
comments. Comments are encouraged and welcome, and the agency says it will
try to answer questions in a timely manner while noting it may not respond to
every one.

What is prohibited

  • Personally identifiable information — Social Security numbers, home or
business addresses, email addresses, phone numbers
  • Threats of harm or violence towards individuals or groups, including
HHS and CDC staff, or towards personal property
  • Profanity, nudity, obscenity or vulgarity, including images of or links
    to such material
  • Explicit promotion of commercial products or services

The first item is unusual in a comment policy and it is the most
public-health-specific of the four: people post about their own health, and
a comment naming an address or a phone number exposes the person who wrote it.

The honest bit

**We do not routinely moderate posted comments, though we reserve the right
to hide or remove comments in violation of this comment policy.**

Not "all comments are reviewed". A policy that claims routine moderation and
does not deliver it misleads people about how safe a space is; one that says
it will act on violations when it sees them is accurate, and tells a reader
what to expect.

This policy applies to all discussions on any CDC-managed forum.

And the standing disclaimer: **the opinions expressed in public comments are
those of the authors and do not represent the official positions of the CDC or
the Department of Health and Human Services** — which is worth knowing before
treating a comment under a CDC post as anything other than a member of the
public speaking.
