NPS donates fire engine to local Fire Safety Alliance

After 16 years of successful service, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area’s Type 3 fire engine has been donated to the Corral Canyon Fire Safety Alliance located in Malibu, California. A new Type 3 fire engine arrived and is in service at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

While in service, the engine traveled to most western states on fire assignments, logging over 130,000 miles, often in rural areas and on challenging dirt roads. It also responded to numerous fires locally, including the 2018 Woolsey Fire, the largest recorded fire in the Santa Monica Mountains.

With its new home down the road in Malibu, the engine will remain on the frontlines of wildland fire suppression, staffed with trained firefighters from the community of Corral Canyon. Corral Canyon Fire Safety Alliance can now staff a wildland engine in their community during elevated fire weather conditions, continuing an excellent working relationship built over many years with local fire departments and fire safety alliances. Staff will also utilize the engine as a backdrop for community events promoting fire safety, education, and prevention. Corral Canyon Fire Safety Alliance is a recognized 501(c)(3) established in May 2009.

The donation was possible through good working relationships with local fire departments, fire safety alliances, National Park Service (NPS) administrative staff and the Department of the Interior (DOI) policy that gives the NPS authority to transfer excess equipment and supplies for wildfires that are no longer needed to carry out the functions of the DOI wildland fire management program.
