What it is

Behçet's syndrome is a disease involving vasculitis — inflammation of the blood vessels — and it affects many parts of the body. Its cause is unknown.

Symptoms

Most common:

  • mouth sores
  • genital sores
  • other skin sores
  • swelling of parts of the eye
  • pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints

More serious:

  • meningitis
  • blood clots
  • inflammation of the digestive system
  • blindness

Who gets it

It's rare in the United States but common in the Middle East and Asia, and mainly affects people in their 20s and 30s.

Diagnosis

It can take a long time: symptoms come and go, and all of them may take months or even years to appear.

Treatment

There's no cure. Treatment aims to ease pain and prevent serious problems, and most people can control their symptoms with it.
