Bell's palsy is the most common cause of facial paralysis. It usually affects only one side of the face.
Symptoms
They come on suddenly and peak about 48 hours after they start. They range from mild to severe:
- twitching, weakness or paralysis;
- a drooping eyelid or corner of the mouth;
- drooling;
- a dry eye or dry mouth, or excessive tearing in the eye;
- a weakened sense of taste.
Cause
Scientists think a viral infection makes the facial nerve swell or become inflamed.
Who is most at risk
People who are pregnant, have diabetes, or are sick with a cold or flu.
Recovery
- Three out of four patients improve without treatment.
- With or without treatment, most people start to get better within 2 weeks and recover completely within 3 to 6 months.
