What it is
Botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by a toxin (poison) made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which lives naturally in soil.
Kinds
- Foodborne botulism — from eating food contaminated with the toxin.
- Wound botulism — when a wound infected with the bacteria makes the toxin; it is more common in people who use heroin.
- Infant botulism — when a baby swallows the bacteria's spores, from soil or honey.
Symptoms
Every form can be deadly and is a medical emergency. Signs include:
- double or blurred vision;
- drooping eyelids;
- slurred speech;
- trouble swallowing;
- dry mouth;
- muscle weakness.
Treatment
It may include antitoxins, intensive medical care, or surgery on infected wounds.
Prevention
- Take great care when canning food at home.
- Don't give babies honey.
- Get prompt care for infected wounds.
