A brain tumour is a growth of abnormal cells in the brain's tissues.
Kinds
- Benign tumours have no cancer cells; malignant ones have cancer cells that grow quickly.
- Primary tumours start in the brain; metastatic tumours start elsewhere in the body and spread to it.
Common symptoms
- headaches, often in the morning;
- nausea and vomiting;
- changes in speech, hearing or sight;
- problems with balance or walking;
- problems with thinking or memory;
- feeling weak or sleepy;
- changes in mood or behaviour;
- seizures.
Diagnosis
A neurological exam, with tests such as an MRI, a CT scan and a biopsy.
Treatment
Options include watchful waiting, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and targeted therapy — drugs or other substances that attack cancer cells with less harm to normal cells. Many people get a combination.
