A common foodborne illness
Campylobacter infection is a common foodborne illness.
How you get it
- Usually from contaminated food, especially raw or undercooked poultry.
- From drinking contaminated water or raw milk.
- From handling infected animal feces (poop).
Some infected people have no symptoms at all.
Symptoms
When symptoms appear, they start two to five days after infection and usually last about a week. They can include:
- diarrhea, sometimes bloody;
- cramping and abdominal pain;
- fever;
- fatigue;
- nausea and vomiting.
Diagnosis and treatment
- Stool tests confirm the diagnosis.
- Most people get better without treatment. Drink extra fluids for as long as the diarrhea lasts.
- People with a severe infection or a weakened immune system may need antibiotics.
- Rarely, the infection leads to reactive arthritis or Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Prevention
- Cook poultry thoroughly.
- Use a separate cutting board and utensils for meat.
- Clean them carefully with soap and hot water after use.
