CDC's Cancer Prevention and Control Initiatives

CDC's Division of Cancer Prevention and Control takes a broad approach to preventing and controlling cancer. Its main initiatives:

Colorectal cancer

CDC and its partners promote colorectal cancer screening. CDC supports education and research, including the Screen for Life: National Colorectal Cancer Action Campaign and studies of the barriers that keep people from being screened, and funds state programs to carry out colorectal cancer strategies from their statewide cancer control plans through the National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program.

Lung cancer

CDC works to prevent and control lung cancer by:

• collecting key data on lung cancer diagnoses and deaths in the United States;
• supporting state, tribal and territorial programs that work to prevent and control tobacco use and promote a healthy diet;
• carrying out public health interventions and counter-marketing to reduce smoking.

Gynecologic cancer

CDC's Inside Knowledge about Gynecologic Cancer campaign raises awareness among the public, health care providers and program planners of the five main gynecologic cancers — cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar. Its educational materials stress that many cancers may be curable if found early and treated appropriately, and with partners CDC teaches women and health professionals about signs and symptoms, screening tests, risk factors and prevention.

Prostate cancer

CDC researches prostate cancer, improves prostate cancer data in cancer registries, and educates men about prostate cancer screening.

Skin cancer

CDC monitors, researches, educates about and intervenes against skin cancer, and works with partners on national surveys — including the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System and the National Health Interview Survey — to measure sunburn and sun-protective behavior.

Cancer survivors

CDC works with partners to develop and carry out strategies to help the growing number of cancer survivors in the United States.

Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network

The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN) is a national network of academic, public health and community partners working to reduce the burden of cancer, especially among people disproportionately affected. Its members carry out community-based participatory cancer research across eight network centers. The CPCRN is a thematic network of CDC's Prevention Research Centers, the agency's flagship program for preventing and controlling chronic disease.
