A dislocation is a joint injury that forces the ends of the bones out of position.
Causes and where it happens
- Common causes: a fall or a blow — sometimes during a contact sport.
- Joints that can dislocate: ankles, knees, shoulders, hips, elbows and the jaw, as well as finger and toe joints.
Signs
A dislocated joint is often:
- swollen;
- very painful;
- visibly out of place;
- impossible to move.
A dislocated joint is an emergency — get medical attention.
Treatment
Treatment depends on which joint is dislocated and how bad the injury is. It may include:
- manipulation to put the bones back in position;
- medicine;
- a splint or sling;
- rehabilitation.
Properly repositioned, a joint usually works and moves normally again within a few weeks. But after a shoulder or kneecap has dislocated once, it is more likely to dislocate again.
Prevention
Protective gear during sports may help prevent dislocations.
