Elder abuse is the mistreatment of an older person, usually by a caregiver. Many older people are victims. It can happen within the family, or in assisted living facilities and nursing homes.

Forms of abuse

  • Physical, sexual or emotional abuse;
  • Neglect or abandonment;
  • Financial abuse — stealing money or belongings.

Warning signs

  • unexplained bruises, burns and injuries;
  • bed sores and poor hygiene;
  • the person becomes withdrawn, agitated or depressed;
  • a sudden change in the person's finances.

Getting help

Elder abuse will not stop on its own; someone needs to step in.

  • Urgent danger: call 911.
  • Otherwise: contact adult protective services.

- Floss between your teeth every day — if you have trouble flossing, ask your dentist about using a special brush or pick instead. - If you have dentures, a bridge, or dental implants, be sure to clean them, too. Your dentist can tell you how. ## Watch for changes in your mouth.
