Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI), most common in young adults.
- Where: the bacteria can infect the genital tract, mouth or anus.
- How it spreads: vaginal, oral or anal sex with an infected partner. A pregnant woman can pass it to her baby during childbirth.
Symptoms
Gonorrhea doesn't always cause symptoms.

Diagnosis and treatment
- Lab tests diagnose it.
- Antibiotics treat it — but treatment is getting harder as drug-resistant strains increase.
Prevention
- Latex condoms, used correctly, greatly reduce but don't eliminate the risk. If you or your partner is allergic to latex, use polyurethane condoms.
- The most reliable way to avoid infection is not to have anal, vaginal or oral sex.
