A bar chart of the age-adjusted percentage of U.S. adults ever tested for HIV, by census region, 2017.

Adults ever tested for HIV, by U.S. census region, 2017. CDC figure.

In 2017, 41.7% of U.S. adults aged 18 and older had ever been tested for HIV. Adults in the Midwest (35.5%) were less likely to have been tested than those in the Northeast (43.5%), South (43.5%) and West (43.4%).

About the data

The figures come from the National Health Interview Survey, which interviews a sample of the civilian population living in households. Adults were asked whether, apart from tests done as part of blood donations, they had ever been tested for HIV; the 5.3% whose answers were unknown were left out. Percentages are age-adjusted to the projected 2000 U.S. population using four age groups (18–44, 45–64, 65–74 and 75 and older).

The census regions are:

  • Northeast: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
  • Midwest: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
  • South: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
  • West: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
