The liver is the largest organ inside the body. It helps digest food, store energy and remove poisons.
Kinds of liver disease
| Cause | Examples |
|---|---|
| Viruses | hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C |
| Drugs, poisons or too much alcohol | steatotic liver disease and cirrhosis |
| Cancer | liver cancer |
| Inherited | hemochromatosis and Wilson disease |
Symptoms
Symptoms vary, but often include:
- swelling of the abdomen and legs;
- bruising easily;
- changes in the color of stool and urine;
- jaundice — yellowing of the skin and eyes.
Sometimes there are no symptoms at all.
Diagnosis
Imaging tests and liver function tests can check for liver damage and help diagnose liver disease.
