You can lower your risk of cancer through the choices you make. CDC highlights six:
| Choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Don't smoke | lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, and smoking is its number one risk factor, linked to about 80%–90% of U.S. lung cancer deaths. Tobacco can cause cancer almost anywhere in the body |
| Avoid secondhand smoke | smoke from others' cigarettes, pipes or cigars also causes lung cancer — breathing it is like smoking |
| Protect your skin | skin cancer is the most common U.S. cancer, and UV rays from the sun and tanning beds appear to be its biggest environmental cause |
| Drink less alcohol | alcohol raises the risk of six kinds of cancer; the less you drink, the lower your risk |
| Keep a healthy weight | overweight and obesity are linked to 13 types of cancer, which make up 40% of U.S. cancer diagnoses each year |
| Get tested for hepatitis C | the most common U.S. viral hepatitis; chronic infection can lead to liver damage, cirrhosis, liver failure or liver cancer. CDC recommends most adults get tested |
Quitting smoking
Visit smokefree.gov to learn how to quit. In a CDC video, three former smokers share the tips that worked for them: they did it, and so can you. More: CDC on tobacco and cancer and secondhand smoke.
Enjoying the sun safely
You can still have fun outdoors:
- stay in the shade
- use sunscreen
- wear sun-protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses
