An ostomy is surgery that creates an opening, called a stoma, from inside the body to the outside. It treats certain diseases of the digestive or urinary system, and gives wastes a new way to leave the body.
An ostomy can be permanent, when an organ has to be removed, or temporary, when an organ needs time to heal. The organ may be the small intestine, colon, rectum or bladder.
Types of ostomy

| Ileostomy | the bottom of the small intestine (the ileum) | the colon, rectum and anus |
| Colostomy | the colon | the rectum and anus |
| Urostomy | the tubes that carry urine to the bladder | the bladder |
