Pests are living things that turn up where they are not wanted, or harm crops, people or animals, and pesticides can help get rid of them. They are not just insect killers: they include chemicals that control weeds, rodents, mildew, germs and more, and many household products contain them.

Pesticides can protect your health by killing germs, animals or plants that could hurt you, but they can also harm people and pets.
Using them safely
- Consider trying non-chemical methods first.
- If you need a pesticide, use it correctly.
- Take special care around children and pets.
- Dispose of pesticides properly, to help protect the environment.
Biologically based pesticides are becoming more popular, and are often safer than traditional ones.
