Rabies is a deadly animal disease caused by a virus. It occurs in wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes, and in dogs, cats and farm animals. People catch it from the bite of an infected animal.
Symptoms
In people, rabies starts with fever, headache and fatigue, followed by confusion, hallucinations and paralysis. Once symptoms begin, the disease is usually fatal.
If you are bitten
A series of shots can prevent rabies in people exposed to the virus, but they must be given right away. If an animal bites you, wash the wound well, then get medical care.
Prevention
- Vaccinate your pets — rabies vaccines exist for dogs, cats and farm animals.
- Don't let pets roam.
- Don't approach stray animals. An animal with rabies may be aggressive and vicious, or tired and weak.
