Rosacea is a long-term disease of the skin — and sometimes the eyes — that causes redness and pimples.

Who gets it

It is most common in women, people with fair skin, and middle-aged and older adults. You may be more likely to have it if you blush a lot or it runs in your family. No one knows what causes it.

Symptoms

It usually affects only the face:

  • frequent redness or flushing;
  • small red lines under the skin;
  • acne-like pimples;
  • a swollen nose;
  • thick skin, usually on the forehead, chin and cheeks;
  • red, dry, itchy eyes, sometimes with vision problems.

Treatment

Rosacea is not dangerous. There's no cure, but medicines — and sometimes surgery — can help.
