Scabies is an itchy skin condition caused by a microscopic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. It is common all over the world and anyone can get it.
How it spreads
- It spreads fast where people are crowded together and often touch skin to skin, as in hospitals, child-care centres and nursing homes.
- It passes easily to sex partners and others in the household.
- Shared clothes, towels and bedding can sometimes spread it, much more easily when the infested person has crusted scabies.
- You cannot catch it from a pet. Pets get a different mite infection, called mange.
Symptoms
- A rash or pimple-like bumps
- Intense itching, worst at night
- Sores from scratching
Diagnosis and treatment
A health care provider diagnoses scabies by looking at the rash and finding burrows in the skin. Several lotions treat it. Wash the infected person's clothes, bedding and towels in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer. Household members and sex partners should be treated too.
