Shock happens when too little blood and oxygen reach the body's organs and tissues. It causes very low blood pressure, can be life-threatening, and often comes with a serious injury.
Kinds of shock
- Hypovolemic shock: after losing a lot of blood or fluid, from bleeding inside or outside the body, dehydration, burns, or severe vomiting or diarrhea.
- Septic shock: from infection in the bloodstream.
- Anaphylactic shock: from a severe allergic reaction, which an insect bite or sting can set off.
- Cardiogenic shock: when the heart cannot pump blood well, as can happen after a heart attack.
- Neurogenic shock: from damage to the nervous system.
Signs
- Confusion or reduced alertness
- Passing out
- A fast heartbeat that comes on suddenly and does not settle
- Sweating
- Pale skin
- A weak pulse
- Fast breathing
- Little or no urine
- Cool hands and feet
What to do
Shock is a medical emergency: get help immediately. Treatment depends on what caused it.
