About the data
- Source: National Vital Statistics System mortality data, 2001–2021.
- Stroke deaths are those with an underlying cause coded I60–I69 in the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision.
- Rates are age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population, so regions with older or younger populations can be compared fairly.
- Regions are the U.S. Census Bureau's four regions.
