Thalassemias are inherited blood disorders. With one, your body makes fewer healthy red blood cells and less hemoglobin — the protein that carries oxygen through the body. The result is anemia.
Who is affected
Thalassemias are most common in people of Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Southern Asian and African descent.
Mild to severe
- Mild: some people have no symptoms or only mild anemia.
- Severe: the most common severe type in the U.S. is Cooley's anemia, which usually appears in the first two years of life. It can cause severe anemia, slowed growth, delayed puberty, and problems with the spleen, liver, heart or bones.
Diagnosis and treatment
Doctors diagnose thalassemias with blood tests.
- Mild or no symptoms: you may need no treatment.
- Treatment: blood transfusions, and treatment to remove excess iron from the body.
- Some severe cases: a bone marrow transplant.
