Tinea is a group of diseases caused by a fungus. They are usually not serious but can be uncomfortable.
How you catch it
- touching an infected person;
- damp surfaces such as shower floors;
- even a pet.
Types and symptoms
| Type | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Ringworm | a red rash forming a ring around normal-looking skin — not caused by a worm |
| Scalp ringworm | itchy, red patches on the head that can leave bald spots; usually in children |
| Athlete's foot | itching, burning and cracked skin between the toes |
| Jock itch | an itchy, burning rash in the groin |
Treatment
Over-the-counter creams and powders clear many tinea infections, especially athlete's foot and jock itch. Other cases need prescription medicine.
