A tsunami is a series of huge ocean waves created by a disturbance under the sea. Causes include:
- earthquakes;
- landslides;
- volcanic eruptions;
- meteorites — chunks of rock from space that strike the Earth.
In the open ocean a tsunami can travel at hundreds of miles an hour. It can hit land with waves 100 feet high or more and cause devastating floods. Drowning is the most common cause of death in a tsunami.
Being prepared
Nothing guarantees safety during a tsunami, but you can act to protect yourself. Have a disaster plan: being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and losses. If you do go through a disaster, it is normal to feel stressed, and you may need help finding ways to cope.
