How it spreads
Zika is a virus spread mostly by mosquitoes. It can also pass:
- from a pregnant mother to her baby, during pregnancy or around birth;
- through sexual contact;
- and, according to reports, through blood transfusions.
Where: outbreaks have occurred in the United States, Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, parts of the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Symptoms
Most people who get the virus don't get sick. About one in five do, with:
- fever;
- rash;
- joint pain;
- conjunctivitis (pink eye).
Symptoms are usually mild, starting 2 to 7 days after the bite of an infected mosquito.
Diagnosis and treatment
A blood test can show whether you're infected. There are no vaccines or medicines for it; plenty of fluids, rest and acetaminophen may help.
Risk to babies
Zika can cause microcephaly — a serious birth defect of the brain — and other problems in babies whose mothers were infected during pregnancy.
Prevention
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that pregnant women not travel to areas with a Zika outbreak. If you decide to go, talk to your doctor first, and prevent mosquito bites:
- use insect repellent;
- wear clothes that cover your arms, legs and feet;
- stay where there is air conditioning or screens on windows and doors.
