A desert that is easier to visit in January than in July

"Look closely. Look again." The park's own instruction is the right one: the
sights and sounds of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, an
International Biosphere Reserve, reveal a thriving community of plants and
animals that is invisible at a glance. Human stories run through the Sonoran
Desert here too, recording thousands of years of desert living.

The season is the whole planning problem

Read that table before booking anything. A summer night here is warmer than a
winter day, and the summer heat does not relent after dark — which is what
makes camping in July a different proposition from camping in January. For
most of what the park offers, **winter is the season and summer is the
obstacle**, which reverses the usual national park calendar.

What there is to do

Camping is the centre of it, in every form the park service recognises:
backcountry, car or front-country, horse, group and RV camping. Alongside
it: astronomy and stargazing — a dark-sky desert far from any city —
scenic driving, road biking, and wilderness hiking.

A wilderness hike, a scenic drive or a night of camping is how the "living
desert abounding with hidden life" stops being a phrase and becomes something
you notice.
