Course Materials for Crime Mapping Using ArcGIS 10.1

NIJ’s Information and Geospatial Technologies Center of Excellence, which was operated through a cooperative agreement with Rand Corp., updated the NIJ Crime Mapping and Analysis Program training courses to reflect changes made from version 9.3.x to 10.1 of Esri’s ArcGIS software.[1] While NIJ does not offer these courses, the materials provided can be used by any agency wishing to offer training on crime mapping or by individuals interested in learning on their own.

Course Materials for Introduction to Crime Mapping and Analysis Using ArcGIS 10.1

The materials in this deliverable are for a course intended to introduce students to the concepts of crime mapping using ArcGIS 10.1. The goal of the course is to give students tangible, usable skills they can immediately apply to their work environments.

Short Videos

Included in these materials are nine short videos. The files are included with the complete materials or you can view them on NIJ's YouTube channel.

The course materials are designed to offer a combination of structured, step-by-step lessons followed by an unstructured period in which students can practice the concepts on their own data. It is assumed that students taking this course will have little or no exposure to ArcGIS, so any instructor should have significant knowledge of and experience with the application. While you are free to use these materials in any order, a sample class agenda could include lessons on:

Course Materials for Intermediate Crime Mapping Using ArcGIS 10.1

NIJ is making available materials for a course focused on advanced tactical analysis using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. The course materials and examples use ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop Basic 10.1, but the techniques and analytical methods presented can be applied in many GIS environments.

Students are expected to have used, at a minimum, ArcGIS 9.x and have a good understanding of basic GIS terminology and methods.
