In 2018, the rate of deaths from unintentional injury by fire or flames in the United States followed the same U-shaped pattern in rural and urban areas: lowest among people aged 15–24 and highest among those 75 and older. At every age, rural rates were roughly two to four times urban rates.

Bar chart comparing death rates from unintentional fire or flame injury across seven age groups in rural and urban areas, 2018.

  • Deaths: underlying cause coded X00–X09 in the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision.
  • Rates: crude deaths per 100,000 population, with 95% confidence intervals.
  • Rural and urban: counties classified by the 2013 National Center for Health Statistics urban-rural scheme.
