August 2022 was 5.1°F warmer than normal around Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area — and it was also one of the driest months of a lopsided year. The counties around the park had their 14th-warmest year in records going back to 1895, with every season warmer than normal, while rainfall swung from a soggy spring to a parched summer and ended the year close to average.

Why the park tracks weather

The National Park Service's Eastern Rivers and Mountains Network monitors ecosystem "vital signs" in parks in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, and weather and climate is one of them. These figures average Monroe, Northampton and Pike Counties in Pennsylvania and Sussex and Warren Counties in New Jersey, from NOAA's Climate at a Glance program. Weather is what the atmosphere does over minutes to months; climate is what to expect from patterns of 30 years or more — climate is what you expect, weather is what you get.

Temperature

Ten months were warmer than normal, six of them — February, March, May, July, August and November — by at least 3°F. The year averaged 49.8°F, 2.1°F above normal.

Precipitation

The year's 47.12 inches were about half an inch above average, making it the 58th wettest on record — but spring was particularly wet and summer very dry.

The long view

Since 1895, average annual temperature around the park has risen about 0.3°F per decade and annual precipitation about 0.39 inches per decade. Park Service scientists project that by 2100 the park's average temperature will rise 3.2°F to 9.4°F, from the best case to the worst, and annual precipitation 8 to 15 percent (Gonzalez and others, 2018). Rapid climate change is already altering wildlife migrations, disrupting habitat, and bringing more destructive storms that threaten cultural resources and park facilities.
