Elder abuse is the mistreatment of an older person, usually by a caregiver. Many older people are victims. It can happen within the family, or in assisted living facilities and nursing homes.
Forms of abuse
- Physical, sexual or emotional abuse;
- Neglect or abandonment;
- Financial abuse — stealing money or belongings.
Warning signs
- unexplained bruises, burns and injuries;
- bed sores and poor hygiene;
- the person becomes withdrawn, agitated or depressed;
- a sudden change in the person's finances.
Getting help
Elder abuse will not stop on its own; someone needs to step in.
- Urgent danger: call 911.
- Otherwise: contact adult protective services.
