Most people recover from COVID-19 within days or weeks. Others develop
post-COVID conditions, which take three distinct shapes:

  • Symptoms that linger for weeks, months or years
  • Recovery, then return — symptoms that come back after apparently
    clearing
  • New symptoms or new health conditions appearing within a few months of
    the infection

You will see it called long COVID, long-haul COVID, long-term effects of
COVID, chronic COVID, post-acute COVID-19, and post-acute sequelae of
SARS-CoV-2 (PASC). They are the same thing.

Who is at higher risk

Anyone who had COVID-19, severe or mild, can have long-lasting symptoms.
Risk is higher if you:

  • Had severe COVID-19, especially with hospitalisation or intensive care
  • Had underlying health conditions beforehand
  • Did not get a COVID-19 vaccine
  • Had multisystem inflammatory syndrome during or after COVID-19 — a rare
but serious condition in which different body parts become inflamed

The symptoms are not one syndrome

They vary in type and combination from person to person, and they are spread
across body systems:

SystemSymptoms
GeneralFatigue, fever
RespiratoryTrouble breathing, cough
HeartChest pain, palpitations
NeurologicTrouble thinking and concentrating ("brain fog"), headaches, sleep problems
DigestiveDiarrhoea, stomach pain

Some people have a wide range of symptoms resembling other conditions, such
as myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome.

Most people improve slowly over time. For some the symptoms last weeks,
months or longer, and **sometimes they are severe enough to cause
disability**.

Diagnosis, and why it is slow

There is no specific test. A provider will ask about your medical history,
including any COVID-19 diagnosis by test, symptoms or exposure; do a physical
exam; and may order blood and imaging tests.

Then comes the part worth saying plainly. Some symptoms of post-COVID
conditions are hard to explain, and **the results of blood and imaging tests
may be normal**. People with unexplained symptoms are **sometimes
misunderstood by their providers**, so a diagnosis can take time.

A normal test result here is not evidence that nothing is wrong. It is a known
characteristic of the condition, and knowing that in advance is useful for
anyone going into the appointment.

Treatment and prevention

There is no specific treatment yet. What exists is a personal care plan,
built with your provider, to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Prevention is avoiding COVID-19 in the first place. **Staying up to date with
vaccines, including boosters**, helps prevent infection and protects against
severe illness — which is also one of the risk factors above.
