Model Renovator Initial Training Course

The Model Certified Renovator Initial Training Course (Lead Safety for Renovation Repair and Painting) was developed by the EPA, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), to train renovation, repair, and painting contractors how to work safely in housing with lead-based paint and comply with EPA's Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule, and HUD's Lead Safe Housing Rule. During the course students will learn:

• Why lead-based paint is a problem during renovations
• What the EPA and HUD regulations require of certified firms and renovators
• How to determine if lead-based paint affects work
• How to begin the work
• How to set up the work area to contain dust
• How to work in a lead-safe manner
• How to clean the work area and verify cleanliness
• How to dispose of waste safely
• How to document your work

The Model Certified Renovator Initial Training Course was revised in 2026 to reflect regulatory changes to the dust-lead action levels (previously referred to as the dust-lead clearance levels) and dust-lead reportable levels (previously referred to as the dust-lead hazard standards) that became effective January 12, 2026 and the updated definitions of target housing and abatement that became effective Jan. 13, 2025 (See 89 FR 89416, Nov. 12, 2024).

La EPA está revisando los materiales de su Curso de capacitación inicial de renovador certificado (Prácticas seguras para trabajar con el plomo en labores de renovación, reparación y pintura) para reflejar las revisiones normativas que entraron en vigor el 12 de enero de 2026 (ver 89 FR 89416, Nov. 12, 2024). Los materiales del curso que no se hayan actualizado para reflejar la norma definitiva de noviembre de 2024 están desactualizados y deben actualizarse adecuadamente antes de utilizarlos.
