A CDC QuickStats from the National Health Interview Survey compares two kinds of mental health treatment for U.S. children and adolescents aged 5–17 in the past 12 months, in 2019 and in 2022.

Bar chart of the percentage of U.S. children aged 5–17 who took medication for their mental health or received counseling or therapy in the past 12 months, 2019 and 2022, with error bars: medication about level, counseling or therapy clearly higher in 2022.

In the past 12 months20192022
Took medication for their mental health8.4%9.3%
Received counseling or therapy10.0%13.8%
  • Counseling or therapy rose, from 10.0% to 13.8%.
  • Medication did not change significantly (8.4% and 9.3%).
  • In both years, more children received counseling or therapy than took medication for their mental health.

How it was measured

The figures come from household interviews with a sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. population. Parents were asked whether, in the past 12 months, the child had received counseling or therapy from a mental health professional — such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, psychiatric nurse or clinical social worker — and whether the child had taken any prescription medication to help with emotions, concentration, behaviour or mental health. A child could count in both groups. The chart's error bars are 95% confidence intervals.
