NASA Minute: Sept. 5, 2025

This week, Secretary Duffy announced NASA’s new associate administrator, Amit Kshatriya, a 20-year veteran of the agency. NASA astronauts Zena Cardman, Mike Fincke, and Jonny Kim completed the Bobby and Pete Challenge to Make America Healthy Again. In addition, we are preparing for two critical missions: IMAP and Carruthers.

Hi, I'm NASA Press Secretary Bethany Stevens, here with your NASA Minute. This week, Secretary Duffy has been laser focused on Artemis and executing on the president's vision to win the second space race. Our mission is maintaining American dominance in space. China wants to get there, but we're getting there first. We will win the second space race.

I'm committed to getting us back to the moon, before President Trump leaves office. On Wednesday, Secretary Duffy announced our new associate administrator, Amit Kshatriya, a 20 year veteran of the agency who has led our Moon to Mars program and is committed to keeping America first in space. Also on Wednesday, NASA astronauts Zena Kargman, Mike Fincke and Jonny Kim joined Bill Hemmer to talk about staying strong and fit in space, right after completing the Bobby and Peach Challenge to Make America Healthy Again. We're also gearing up for the two critical missions, iMap and Carruthers, to protect our astronauts and technology from solar storms. The sun sends out a constant flow of particles and energy that can disrupt GPS, power grids and space operations.

These missions, which are scheduled to launch at the end of the month, will help us predict and mitigate the effects of those disruptions. We also successfully completed a first of its kind cryogenic fuel test, marking a major step towards storing super cold propellants without loss during long missions. And today, NASA released a draft Phase 2 Announcement for Proposals asking for feedback from American companies on the next phase of commercial space station strategies, making sure our country leads the future of low Earth orbit as we prepare a seamless transition of activities from the International Space Station.
