The One Health concept. NPS.

What One Health means

The plants, animals and landscapes around us make up the world's natural resources, and that variety of life supports the health of every species — including ours: physical, mental and spiritual health and social well-being. The idea that human, animal and environmental health are all connected is called One Health.

  • Many people know we can share diseases with other species, such as West Nile virus.
  • Fewer realize that healthy ecosystems help keep such diseases in check, and bring other health benefits.
  • We depend on biodiversity for everything from food to the air we breathe — yet many people have lost touch with that dependence.

"One Health is all about recognizing how connected we are to our world and other species, and there's no better place to experience this connection or understand natural resources than national parks," says Dr. Danielle Buttke, the National Park Service's One Health coordinator. Time in nature, she notes, makes people stronger, smarter, healthier, happier and more productive — and "the more people that understand these benefits of nature, hopefully the more people that will support conservation."

The concept in three parts

Environmentwhen animals and other natural resources are harmed by development, we are often harmed too, now or later
Humanswe depend on the environment not only for food, clean water and materials, but for physical and mental health
Animalschanges to habitat, such as climate change, can change how diseases spread to animals and to us

Because we share so much with other species, when different disciplines work together on health, the benefits reach many creatures in many ways.

International One Health Day

International One Health Day is November 3 — "a chance to think about how you and your loved ones can connect with nature in your daily life, appreciate the benefits it has, and hopefully think about what you can do to help conserve it," says Buttke. The best way to spend it is outdoors.
