The numbers
From 1999 to 2018, death rates from unintentional traumatic brain injury (TBI) among people 24 and younger fell in every age group.

For most of the period, rates were highest at 20–24, followed by 15–19, 0–4 and 5–14.

How it was measured
The figures are deaths per 100,000 people in each age group, from National Vital Statistics System mortality data. A death counted as TBI-related if the records listed head and brain injuries — including open head wounds, skull and facial fractures, injuries to the brain and optic nerve, crushing injuries of the head, and the lasting effects of such injuries — using codes from the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision.
