সমর্থন

Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic disease that causes benign (non-cancerous) tumours to grow in the brain and other organs.

Symptoms

They depend on where the tumours grow, and can include:

  • skin problems, such as pale patches and thickened skin;
  • seizures;
  • behaviour problems;
  • intellectual disability;
  • kidney problems.

Course

Some people show signs at birth; in others, symptoms take time to develop. The disease can be mild or can cause severe disability, and in rare cases tumours in vital organs, or other symptoms, can be life-threatening.

Treatment

There is no cure, but treatment can ease symptoms. Options include:

  • medicines;
  • educational and occupational therapy;
  • surgery, including surgery for specific complications.
