Støtte

Botox is a drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum — the same toxin behind botulism, a life-threatening kind of food poisoning. In small doses, doctors use it to treat a range of problems.

Facial wrinklestemporary smoothing, to improve appearance
Severe underarm sweating
Cervical dystoniaa neurological disorder causing strong neck and shoulder muscle contractions
Blepharospasmuncontrollable blinking
Strabismusmisaligned eyes
Chronic migraine
Overactive bladder

How it works

Botox injections weaken or paralyze certain muscles, or block certain nerves. The effect lasts about three to twelve months, depending on what is being treated.

Side effects

  • Most common: pain, swelling or bruising where the needle went in.
  • Some people get flu-like symptoms, a headache or an upset stomach.
  • Injections in the face can cause temporarily drooping eyelids.

Do not use Botox if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Becoming a bit more forgetful with age is normal. Dementia is not a normal part of ageing — it is a group of separate diseases, and which one you have decides whether the first sign is memory, movement, language or behaviour.

Jaw clicking and popping is common and, on its own, is not a temporomandibular disorder. TMDs are a group of more than thirty conditions whose commonest symptom is pain, most of them clear up by themselves, and there is no standard test for them.

Before going home, newborns are screened with a heel-prick blood test, a hearing test and a blood-oxygen test. What the tests look for, why early diagnosis matters, and what to do after a positive screen.
