Definitions of terms used to describe children's nutrition, health and health conditions.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Anemia | the body does not have enough red blood cells, or they are less able to carry oxygen through the body |
| Complementary foods | foods or drinks other than breast milk or infant formula — for example infant cereals, fruits, vegetables, water |
| Exclusive breastfeeding | feeding your baby only breast milk — no other foods or liquids, including formula or water. Exceptions: medicines and vitamin or mineral supplements |
| Fortify | to add vitamins and minerals to a food or drink |
| International Units (IU) | units for measuring vitamins and minerals |
| Iron deficient | not having enough iron |
| Iron deficiency anemia | anemia caused by too little iron |
| Preterm infant | a baby born before 37 weeks of pregnancy |
| Textures | how food feels in a baby's mouth and hands — some smooth, some lumpy |
| Weaning | gradually switching a baby from breast milk to other foods and drinks |
